Hurghada is one of the easiest and most rewarding places in the world to go kitesurfing. Reliable wind, warm water, wide shallow lagoons and a short flight from much of Europe make it a favourite with beginners and experienced riders alike. This kitesurf Hurghada guide brings together everything you need to plan your trip – from the wind and the spots to lessons, rental, safaris and practical tips.
Why kitesurf in Hurghada?
- Wind on around 270 days a year, mostly from the north and cross-onshore.
- Warm, clear water and sunshine almost every day.
- Shallow, flat-water lagoons with sandy bottoms – ideal for learning and for freestyle.
- Easy logistics: an international airport, accommodation for every budget and short transfers.
- Great value for lessons, rental and holidays compared with many other kite destinations.
Wind and seasons
You can kitesurf in Hurghada all year round. The prevailing wind blows from the north, sometimes from the east, and twice a year – typically in May and November – it can swing to south-south-east. Spring is often the windiest season, autumn brings strong and even wind with warm water, summer is reliably windy and hot, and winter is milder with cooler water, when a long 5 mm wetsuit is recommended. For a month-by-month breakdown, read our guide to the best time for Red Sea kitesurfing, and check today’s conditions on our live Hurghada wind forecast.
Where to ride
Hurghada’s kite spots stretch along the coast from El Gouna in the north to Soma Bay and Safaga in the south. Our own spot is on a long, shallow lagoon north of the city, between Hurghada and El Gouna, beside the AMC Royal Hotel. The water is waist-deep over a large area with a sandy bottom and no coral, it is flat at mid tide, and the wind is fresh and steady. Patches of deeper water and natural ramps keep experienced riders entertained, and a long jetty makes a great backdrop for photos. See our Red Sea kitesurfing spot.
Learning to kitesurf in Hurghada
Hurghada’s shallow lagoons make learning faster and safer: you can stand up after every fall and your instructor can stay close to you. Most beginners need 10–12 hours of lessons over three or four days to ride independently. At Sultan Kite School, the pathway runs from a 3-hour Introduction ($130) to Level 1 (6 hours, $220), Level 2 (9 hours, $310) and Level 3 (12 hours, $400), with single one-hour lessons at $50. Courses include the instructor, equipment, harness, wetsuit boots, helmet, insurance during the training and use of the kite centre. See our kitesurfing lessons in Hurghada.
Rental and storage
There is no need to fly with your own gear. You can hire kites, boards, bars, harnesses, hydrofoils and wetsuits by the hour, the day or the week from our kite rental in Hurghada. Regular visitors can leave their own equipment in our kite storage, which includes overnight storage, the daily beach fee, a compressor, beach assistance, showers and free Wi-Fi.
Kite safari: the Red Sea islands
For experienced riders, a kite safari is the ultimate Hurghada adventure. You spend the week on a yacht and ride remote island spots such as Tawila and Geisum, where strong, steady wind meets shallow, chop-free lagoons. Discover our Red Sea kite safari.
Getting there and getting around
Hurghada International Airport has direct flights from many European cities. Our kite station is at Palma Resort, between Hurghada and El Gouna: the Go-Bus between the two towns can drop you nearby, taxis are easy to find, and drivers can use the hotel car park. Visitors from many countries can get a visa on arrival – check the latest rules for your nationality before you travel.
Where to stay
If kitesurfing is your priority, stay close to the spot. The AMC Royal and Hawaii hotels are both close to our kite station. Read our kitesurf holiday Hurghada guide for more on accommodation and planning.
What to pack
- Board shorts and a lycra, plus a wetsuit suited to the season (long 5 mm in winter).
- High-factor, reef-friendly sun cream, a cap and sunglasses with a strap.
- Neoprene boots if you like to protect your feet.
- Your own harness if you have one – everything else can be rented.
Safety first
Always ride within your ability, check the wind before you go out and use the beach assistance service for launching and landing. Our kitesurfing safety tips cover the essentials.
Kitesurf Hurghada guide: quick answers
Is Hurghada good for beginners?
Yes. Wide, waist-deep lagoons with sandy bottoms and a steady cross-onshore wind make Hurghada one of the easiest places in the world to learn. You can stand up after every fall, and your instructor can stay close to you throughout the lesson.
How many days do I need?
Beginners usually need three or four days of lessons to ride independently, so a week gives you time to learn and then practise. Experienced riders can enjoy a long weekend, but most stay for a week or more to make the most of the wind.
Do I need my own equipment?
No. You can rent everything on the beach, from kites and boards to harnesses and wetsuits, so you can travel light and choose the right size for each day.
We hope this kitesurf Hurghada guide helps you plan a brilliant trip – see you on the water!
