Red Sea Kitesurfing: The Best Time of Year to Ride

14 October 2026

One of the great things about Red Sea kitesurfing is that there is no real off-season. The wind blows on around 270 days a year in Hurghada, the sun almost always shines and the water never gets truly cold. Still, each season has its own character. This guide explains the best time for Red Sea kitesurfing depending on your level, the wind you like and the wetsuit you want to wear.

The wind pattern in a nutshell

The prevailing wind along the Red Sea coast comes from the north. Around Hurghada it usually blows cross-onshore – ideal for safe kitesurfing – and sometimes from the east. Twice a year, typically in May and November, it can turn to south-south-east and blow side-shore. The breeze often builds during the day, so afternoons tend to be windier than early mornings.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is often the windiest time of year, with strong breezes that suit small kites and experienced riders. Early in the season a long 5 mm wetsuit is best; by April a 3 mm suit is usually enough, and in May many riders switch to board shorts or a lycra, especially on lighter or southerly days.

Best for: intermediate and advanced riders, big-air fans and anyone who loves powered-up sessions.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings hot weather, warm water and dependable wind. It is a great time for longer sessions in board shorts, but the sun is intense – plan for shade, plenty of water and a midday break.

Best for: riders who love warm water and want consistent conditions.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is a favourite for many riders. In September and October the wind is typically strong and even, ideal for small and medium kites, and the sea is still warm after the summer. By late October and November a shorty is useful, and a long 3 mm wetsuit works well too.

Best for: all levels – a great balance of wind, warmth and comfortable air temperatures.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is milder, with cooler water and a mix of calmer days and good windy spells. Bring a long 5 mm wetsuit. With fewer visitors, the lagoons can be quieter, and the gentler days are perfect for lessons and practice.

Best for: beginners and riders who prefer quieter beaches.

The best time for Red Sea kitesurfing: which month suits you?

  • Learning to kitesurf: autumn and winter often offer moderate, manageable wind – ideal for kitesurfing lessons in Hurghada.
  • Progressing and jumping: spring and autumn deliver the strongest, most consistent sessions.
  • Warm-water riding: May to October is board-shorts season for most people.
  • Kite safari: spring and autumn are excellent for a Red Sea kite safari to the islands.

In short, the best time for Red Sea kitesurfing depends on whether you want strong wind, warm water or quiet beaches.

Wetsuit guide at a glance

  • December–February: long 5 mm wetsuit.
  • March–April: long 5 mm early in spring, 3 mm from April.
  • May–October: board shorts, a lycra or a shorty.
  • November: shorty or long 3 mm wetsuit.

Everyone feels the cold differently, so if in doubt, bring the warmer option – or hire a wetsuit at the beach.
