A kite safari is one of the best kitesurfing experiences you can have – a week on a yacht, riding remote island lagoons in the Red Sea. But once the boat leaves Hurghada marina, there are no shops. That is why a good kite safari packing list matters. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need, and nothing you do not.
Riding gear
- Harness – bring your own if you have one; comfort matters on long days.
- Kites, bar and board – if you are bringing your own, pack a repair kit and spare fin screws. Kite school equipment can also be hired.
- Wetsuit for the season – a long 5 mm in early spring, 3 mm from April, a shorty or long 3 mm in late autumn, and board shorts or a lycra in the warm months.
- Long-sleeved lycra and board shorts – essential sun protection on the water.
- Neoprene boots – essential on our safaris, to protect your feet around the islands. Gloves are recommended too.
- Helmet and impact vest – if you normally ride with them.
Sun protection
- High-factor, water-resistant, reef-friendly sun cream.
- Sunglasses with a strap or leash.
- A cap or hat for the boat.
- Lip balm with SPF and after-sun lotion.
Clothing for the boat
- Light, breathable T-shirts and shorts.
- A warm fleece or hoodie for windy evenings on deck.
- Flip-flops or sandals (many boats are shoe-free inside).
- A quick-dry towel – handy even if towels are provided.
- A sleeping bag, if you love sleeping under the stars on deck.
Health and documents
- Passport with enough validity, and your visa if required (the Egyptian visa costs US$25).
- Medical and/or sports insurance that covers kitesurfing.
- Personal medication – a first-aid kit is on board, but bring anything you need personally.
- Seasickness tablets if you are prone to motion sickness.
- Rehydration sachets and plasters for small cuts.
Tech and extras
- A USB stick or SD card for the photos and videos from your sessions.
- An action camera and mount, if you have one.
- A power bank and the right charging cables.
- A dry bag for your phone and valuables.
- Snorkelling mask – snorkelling, SUP, wakeboarding, fishing and yoga are all included on our safaris.
- Your own alcoholic drinks if you would like any; soft drinks are included.
What you do not need to bring
On our Red Sea kite safari the price includes transfers between the airport and the yacht, your cabin, three meals a day with snacks and fruit, soft drinks, equipment storage, rescue cover, photos and videos and Wi-Fi – so you can travel light.
Kite safari packing list: final tips
- Use soft bags rather than hard suitcases – they are much easier to store on a boat.
- Pack your kite gear carefully: remove fins, protect the pump hose and keep small parts together. Our kite equipment care and storage guide explains how.
- Label everything – lots of riders have similar gear.
Print this kite safari packing list or save it on your phone, and tick things off as you pack.
