How to Choose a Kite School in Hurghada: Spot, Wind & Instructors

4 October 2022
,

Hurghada is one of the best places in the world to learn and improve your kitesurfing – but not every kite school Hurghada riders can choose offers the same experience. The spot, the instructors and the way the school is run make a huge difference to how quickly and how safely you progress. Here is what to look for, and what you can expect when you ride with us.

Why Hurghada is a kitesurfing hotspot

Hurghada sits on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, where the wind blows on around 270 days a year. The prevailing wind comes from the north and blows cross-onshore along much of the coast, the sun shines almost all year and the water stays warm enough to ride in a shorty or board shorts for much of the season. Add wide, shallow lagoons with sandy bottoms, and you have near-perfect conditions for Red Sea kitesurfing – whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced rider.

1. Start with the spot: where does the kite school in Hurghada teach?

The single most important factor is where the school teaches. For learning, you want:

  • Shallow, flat water – ideally waist-deep over a large area, so you can stand up after every fall.
  • A sandy bottom with no rocks or coral.
  • Steady, cross-onshore wind that brings you back towards the beach rather than out to sea.
  • Space, so beginners are not crowded together and lines do not tangle.

Sultan Kite School is based on a long lagoon north of Hurghada, beside the AMC Royal Hotel, between Hurghada and El Gouna. The water is flat at mid tide, the bottom is sandy and the wind is fresh and almost constant – which is exactly why we chose it.

2. Look closely at the instructors

Great kitesurfing instructors are patient, calm and good at explaining things simply. They watch your kite, not their phone, and adjust the lesson to how you are doing that day. Ask how many students each instructor teaches at once, whether lessons are private or shared, and how the school checks progress. Our team has been teaching in Hurghada since 2012, and our instructors work with riders from all over the world – from first-timers to confident kiters who want coaching on new skills.

3. Safety should never be optional

A responsible kite school in Hurghada will always give a thorough safety briefing, provide helmets, check the weather before every session and have trained staff on the beach to help you launch and land. Ask about rescue cover and insurance. At our centre, beach assistants help with every launch and landing, and insurance for the duration of the training is included in all our courses.

4. Equipment and facilities

Modern, well-maintained equipment in a full range of sizes makes learning easier and safer. Facilities matter too, especially if you will spend whole days at the beach. Our kite centre offers:

  • Guarded storage for kites and boards, plus kite storage packages for your own gear.
  • Equipment rental – kites, boards, bars, harnesses, hydrofoils and wetsuits.
  • A compressor, a kite washing area with fresh water, showers and toilets.
  • A repair service for kites and accessories.
  • A shaded chill-out zone with tea, coffee and soft drinks, and lunch you can order without leaving the beach.

5. Clear courses and fair prices

A good school will tell you exactly what each course covers and what is included. Our beginner pathway runs from a 3-hour Introduction ($130) through Level 1 (6 hours, $220), Level 2 (9 hours, $310) and Level 3 (12 hours, $400), with single one-hour lessons at $50. Each course includes the instructor, equipment, harness, wetsuit boots, helmet, insurance during the training and use of the kite centre. You can see the full details on our kitesurfing lessons page.

6. The atmosphere

Kitesurfing is a social sport. The best schools have a friendly, relaxed vibe where riders swap tips, cheer each other on and stay for a drink after the session. It is a big part of why so many of our guests come back year after year.

Beyond lessons: kite safaris and more

Once you are riding confidently, the Red Sea has even more to offer. Our Red Sea kite safari takes you by yacht to remote spots such as Tawila and Geisum, with flat-water lagoons around the islands and strong, steady wind.
